We started at the MaARTe fair four years ago, as a guest of my good friend Apol Lejano, who had just started her brand of hand-made fabric toys called La Pomme. To complement her line, she assembled a collective of artisans with the same sensibility: hand-made for children. I brought only a crateful of items and only sold about five pieces. But I saw the reaction of the buyers to my products. And I was encouraged.

There was an emotional connection. They were gushing, looking for more, asking for new designs, and just eager to explore. I think terra cotta clay has that appeal: it’s familiar, earthy, and — when shaped into miniatures — quite adorable.

After that first try, we applied for our own booth. Getting in wasn’t easy. There was a long line of  other artisans wanting to come in. The organizers suggested I team up with the other potters who already had booths. I suspect they were not yet confident that our terra cotta pieces could meet their museum quality standards and draw a good customer base. But I kept trying and developed products that I hoped would pass curator benchmarks. Right before deadline, we got a green light.

Now, we are on our third year with a solo booth. It is really through MaARTe fair that our claystorytellers became known. The stamp of approval from the Museum Foundation and  then the media support they provide really boosted awareness of what we do.

Over the years, we’ve made many good friends at MaARTe, fellow vendors and loyal customers. We look forward to seeing you all there again.

Remember we have moved to 8 Rockwell. The fair starts tomorrow, Aug 26 and ends on Aug 28.. Gates open at 9 am and closes at 9 pm.

Just a couple of months ago, my original crew of clay artisans quit on me after having a quarrel among themselves. I was heartbroken and thought of closing shop. I had spent three years training my crew and their skills had already surpassed mine. I couldn’t imagine starting over again.

But I remembered the Zen teaching: “In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s mind there are few.” So, with a Zen mind, I chose to begin again.

Meet my present crew of artisans who, just a few weeks ago, had not even touched clay. They were planstadora, labandera, and manicurista. All young mothers living in an urban poor community and hoping for a better life for their children. I am so proud of Joan, Darlyn, and Weng. They took to clay like children themselves, finding through their clay work an innate creativity and a new sense of dignity.

Please think of these ladies when you see, handle, and buy our clay pieces. Each piece you purchase holds infinite possibilities for them.

Try something new together for Valentine’s day! Come try your hand at shaping clay and telling your love story through it. Playing with clay can be oh-so-fun and oh-so-revealing (wink! wink!). We’ll set you up so that you can create your own terracotta clay storytellers or paint a Valentine’s pot together. It will be a creative new way of getting to know each other. We’ll provide the clay, tools, wine, music, and the triggetr questions to help you express what you’ve always wanted to say to each other. That, after all, is what clay storytellers are for.We’ll start off with a candlelight dinner, then we’ll move over to the pottery studio where you’ll be given an instructive demonstration. With your pottery area set up for you, we’ll leave you to play and cozy up together for a loving conversation about your pieces. If you’d like to keep your creations, we will finish, fire, and paint the pieces for you (for an additional fee). You can pick them up after two to three weeks.

If playing with clay is not your thing, you may also want to check out our outdoor movie option. You may also decide to stay the night with us, we have a special Valentine’s overnight package rate (see below).

OUR RATES for Clay Storyteller Valentine Date on Feb 12, 13, or 14

Early bird rate is P1,800 for 2 pax for reservations made on or before February 7, 2016. Regular rate is P2,200. Package includes a romantic dinner (soup, green salad, steak or roast chicken, dessert), the clay session, plus a Valentine gift. Reservation is required. We will expect full payment upon confirmation. Dinner starts at 7 PM, the clay session begins at 8:30 PM. There will be an additional charge for those who would like to have their pieces fired and painted.

OUR RATES for Romantic Overnight Stay

Overnight stay for 2 pax is P5,800. Includes romantic bedroom set-up (flowers in the room, rose petals on the bed), romantic dinner (soup, green salad, steak or roast chicken, dessert) on Day 1 plus complimentary breakfast on Day 2. Package also includes an option to participate in the Valentine clay date or in the outdoor movie. We require full payment upon confirmation. Check in time is 2 PM. Check out time is 12:00 PM.

OUR STORY IS OUT. Thank you to Alya Honasan of the Philippine Daily Inquirer for the wonderful feature on our Casa San Pablo clay storytellers. The story captured our journey so well, tracing from my days as an editor and publishing executive to give all that up to be an innkeeper and clay artisan.

There are still storytellers, and tablets featuring colorful processios or village regulars, like a rice or vegetable vendor. She even incorporates some figures with potted plants. For Christmas, her belen comes in different sizes and settings, festooned with parol or with a church as backdrop
